Bio + Journey \\ Amy Skinner
Â
Amy was sort of an ex-patriate kid, with a childhood shared between Alberta and Indonesia. Calgary Board of Education and West Island College, with ultra-awesome Class Afloat too.Â
I left Calgary in 1995 for Peterborough, Ontario where I learned that trying out for all varsity sports teams, doing well in classes, a healthy social life and some artistic direction would earn award money! A joint honors degree from Trent lead me over to Kingston to complete a concurrent education degree from Queen’s. Student teaching at an island school (daily bike rides to and from a ferry, occasionally with Don Cherry of all crazy Canadian-ness), evening teaching at the now defunct Prison for Women (omg the stories), playing sports and drink biking. Kingston was a blast. But eventually the repeat broken heart from Peterborough and Kingston launched an extended work contract with Club Med, Dominican Republic. Life in beachwear with a bottomless buffet and bar was excellent for a while, but then I started graduate school in Vancouver. I studied and played. Loved and lost. Backpacked around Europe. Got a Master of Arts from Simon Fraser University and never minded the rain.
With a rough plan, promise of a job and a pug puppy, I moved to Montreal. Worked on my French skills, got jobs, got into McGill law and learned ‘joie de vivre’. Part way through law school I took a break and opened a clothing store, Mad-Ame Boutique. Fast forward a few years and I eventually completed civil law (BCL) and common law (LLB) degrees from McGill. Some more great adventures took place, including selling the store’s interests and falling in love, and I moved to New York City. Gained entry to the New York State Bar Association, which despite being a great name for an alcohol-based bar is actually a rather serious endeavor, and worked for some cool international corporations. I was there for the financial collapse, bail outs, Obama’s election and the miracle on the Hudson. It rocked. I rode transit through the World Trade Centre re-build, walked past the Wall Street bull, sang the Law & Order theme song each time I crossed the Court and actually attended classes in Times Square. Got gay married. Heart break. Reconciliation. Let’s transfer to India with our cool international jobs! Mumbai! Heart break, reconciliation, let’s move to Calgary! It will be awesome to start all over, at the bottom, again!
Articled with a great firm in Calgary and got admittance to the Law Society of Alberta. Took a great position as an associate lawyer with the City of Calgary. Heart break. Moved into my parents’ basement. Divorce. Bought and moved into my own home right in time for it to be flooded in the epic summer floods of 2013. But there was this really cute flood clean up volunteer…  With the support of that cute volunteer, a French bull dog, delightfully chubby housecat, the still empty basement and a few more years of great experiences, Amy Skinner Law is born! Great exposure, experiences, successes and disappointments have led me to a place where I can say with confidence that I do some things really, really well. I will do great work for you, and we will have fun doing this together.
